SUMMARY:The Lena Baker Story
DESCRIPTION:Shot in Colquitt\, Georgia at the Southwest Film Commission's
  Jokara-Micheaux Film\, Television\, and Music Production Studio\, THE L
ENA BAKER STORY recounts the tragic true story of the first and only wom
an sentenced to die in the electric chair in the state of Georgia. Again
st her will\, African American housekeeper\, Lena Baker (Tichina Arnold\
, searing and vivid) engages in a complicated and controversial affair w
ith Eliot Arthur (Peter Coyote)\, the father of her white employer (Chri
s Burns). Warned to stay away from the abusive drunkard by both her moth
er (Beverly Todd) and the town sheriff (Michael Rooker in a subtle\, and
complex performance)\, Baker gives into Arthur's advances in a misguide
d attempt to protect her family. When she finally has enough\, Lena atte
mpts to break away. Arthur threatens her with a gun and a shocking confr
ontation ensues leaving Baker facing a murder wrap in the Jim Crow era s
outh\, at the mercy of a jury of twelve white men. \nIn 2005\, Baker wa
s posthumously pardoned\, undoing sixty years later\, the damage done in
a speedy six hour trial. Inspired by the 1998 Dr. Lena Bond Phillips' b
ook credited with re-opening the case\, this film changes the names of a
ll the major players\, with the exception of Lena Baker. \n\nThis debut
feature film from writer\, director and producer Ralph Wilcox is a work
of tremendous promise\, marking the arrival of another major force to t
he growing roster of Georgia-based powerhouse producers.\nCast and crew

SUMMARY:The Cake Eaters
DESCRIPTION:Easy Kimbrough is mourning his recently deceased wife while l
iving with his youngest son\, Beagle\, in a small town. The shy Beagle\,
who was left to serve as caregiver to his mother during her illness\, m
eets and falls in love with Georgia\, who has a terminal nervous system
disease and an overprotective mother. Life has settled into a seemingly
comfortable routine until Beagle’s older brother\, Guy\, returns from Ne
w York where he was chasing rockstar dreams. His return upsets the delic
ate balance as Easy tries to hold onto a long-held secret and Georgia pu
rsues Beagle against her mother’s wishes. The Cake Eaters is one of thos
e quiet movies where much is said in the silences and provides an authen
tic portrait of rural life without drifting into melodrama.

SUMMARY:Land Of Confusion
DESCRIPTION:In March of 2004 a Pennsylvania filmmaker was activated with
his National Guard unit and deployed to Iraq. During the next twelve mon
ths he would document his unique experiences from training for desert de
ployment in a broken down army camp in the cold winter to Iraq as he and
his platoon were tasked with the politically charged mission of searchi
ng for the infamous weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). The search would
take them from the heart of Baghdad to rural Iraqi farms. Land Of Confu
sion offers a never-before seen account of working with the\, then secre
tive\, Iraq Survey Group (ISG) as they travel throughout the country sea
rching for evidence that Saddam had the WMDs. The soldiers speak frankly

foe Hart Carlton\, who steals Bobby's screenplay ideas and puts them in
to a campy morality play about 9-11. All of this occurs while Bobby has
several failed relationships of his own. What results is a social-sati
re about moral-relativism\, self-reliance\, authorship and authenticity
and an homage to Vittorio De Sica's 1952 Italian neo-realist gem 'Umbert
o D.' Let Them Chirp Awhile is a stylized art-film comedy with the fear
 less spirit of 1970's Cinema.

SUMMARY:SEX: The Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Two episodes (“Do Your Thing” and “Tainted Love”) of a multi-
part documentary series on the sexual revolution and its enduring influe
nce on American culture will be screened. It's a story of a time in our
history that challenged centuries of traditional morality about sex: a
time that eradicated people's fear\, loathing and ignorance about sex\,
and in the end\, a time when laws were changed and rulings made to end c
ensorship and legal retribution for people's private sexual behavior. I
 t was a time of incredible styles\, scenes\, visionaries\, movements\, f
 anatics\, charlatans\, and middle-class experimentation\, but also provo
ked people of traditional values who felt threatened by it all\, who con
 demned it\, and launched a counter-revolution.

SUMMARY:Bohica
DESCRIPTION:Bohica takes place over 24 hours on a patch of desert in Amer
ican-occupied Afghanistan\, where four US Army Reservists are stuck on a
meaningless mission guarding a radio tower. Dying of boredom rather tha
n enemy fire\, the monotony is broken when the US Air Force mistakenly a
ir-drops a keg of beer and these Weekend Warriors embark upon an afterno
on of booze\, banter\, and bonding. But as night falls\, the reality of
war interrupts the drunken respite\, as an Afghani militia attacks their

SUMMARY:Nerdcore Rising
DESCRIPTION:Nerdcore is the term for a new wave of hip-hop in which nerdy
white guys rap about topics such as Magic the Gathering card\, Chewbacc
a\, math\, and other geek-culture staples. Like their hip-hop counterpar
ts\, nerdcore artists are simply rapping about their life experiences an
d what they know. The film follows the godfather of the genre\, MC Front
alot\, on his first national tour. The tour is moved along by Front's in
teraction with band mates and the critical supporting role played by his
fans: a special breed of loyal and super smart dorks who can't get enou
gh of the Front. Commentary from industry notables like Weird Al Yankovi
c\, Prince Paul\, and Jello Biafra pepper the film to examine the legiti

ure\, and the desperation of one MC who's trying to make it.\n\n

SUMMARY:Hidden in Plain Sight
DESCRIPTION:Hidden in Plain Sight is inspired by the tradition of cinemat

go de Chile\, Hanoi Vietnam\, Dakar Senegal and Marseille France. Vignet
tes from each place are juxtaposed so that the viewer is pulled from pla

SUMMARY:When Clouds Clear (Después de la Neblina)
DESCRIPTION:When Clouds Clear is a gripping story of human survival and s
acrifice. Junín\, a remote Ecuadorian town of 270 people has managed to
preserve their cloud forest and water sources against the intrusion of i
nternational mining companies. The people fight radically to keep their
community free of contamination and are often forced to take an extreme
approach in their resistance. The economic pressures of foreign companie
s have caused much confusion\, greed and division within families and be
tween communities. Junín has banished those who support mining and unite
d in the fight. Told through the eyes of a 14 year-old boy who has conti
nued his education in order keep mining out\, his outlook is optimistic
and he believes the fractured relationships between families will one da
 y be repaired.\n\n

SUMMARY:The Project
DESCRIPTION:Three ambitious yet naive filmmakers Justin\, Dana and John m
ove to Brooklyn intent on making a revealing documentary about clashing
factions of inner-city life. Justin follows the day to day lives of two
NYPD officers while Dana's portion focuses on Thomas\, a black youth poi
sed to move up from the hardships of low-income living. As the filming p
rogresses\, both the subjects of the documentary as well as the filmmake
rs are confronted with challenges that cloud their objectives. Stories m
erge\, relationships corrode and the filmmakers can not remain impartial
observers\, but instead become active participants in the underground w
orld they set out to observe. This Audience Award-winning film from Slam
dance examines the sometimes problematic relationship between documentar
y filmmakers and their subjects within the framework of a gritty urban t

The soldiers speak frankly
about everything from the media coverage and the politics of the war th
at they are fighting because they are speaking to one of their own.

SUMMARY:Hidden in Plain Sight
DESCRIPTION:Hidden in Plain Sight is inspired by the tradition of cinemat
ic city symphonies and is made up of footage shot in four cities: Santia
go de Chile\, Hanoi Vietnam\, Dakar Senegal and Marseille France. Vignet
tes from each place are juxtaposed so that the viewer is pulled from pla
ce to place\, picking up the pieces\, making connections only to have th
em disappear just as quickly. Historical details (about Salvador Allende
and Ho Chi Minh\, among others)\, quotes from writing (by Miriama Ba an
d Charles Baudelaire and others)\, laconic captions\, scored music\, and
expressionistic sound design offer contrasting contexts in which to vie

SUMMARY:The Axe in the Attic
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina\, two filmmakers\, draw
n together by outrage\, take a sixty-day road trip from New England to N
ew Orleans. Along the way they meet evacuees and witness the loss\, dign
ity\, perseverance\, and humor of people who have become exiles in their
own country. The Axe in the Attic documents the natural and human lands
cape of Katrina and how evacuees adjust to new environs – some achingly
familiar and others wholly alien. Having lost everything\, they seek saf
ety and comfort however they can. Amid the grieving and isolation\, fami
ly\, church\, cell phones\, and consumer goods become life support. The
breakdown of trust between a government and its citizens\, the influence

SUMMARY:Intimidad
DESCRIPTION:Cecy and Camilo\, both 21 years-old\, recently migrated to Re
ynosa\, Mexico from Santa Maria\, Puebla with a dream to buy land and bu
ild a home. A year later they return to their rural hometown to reunite
with their daughter. What seems like a satisfying reunion turns into a c
onfusing dilemma that transforms the course of their marriage. The title
is truly appropriate as we get an intimate look over four years of one
family trying to live out the “Mexican Dream” of owning their own home.
So often our view of Mexico is colored by the immigration debate that it
is refreshing to see a straightforward look at the life of a family in
 our neighbor to the South.\n\n

Commentary from industry notables like Weird Al Yankovi
c\, Prince Paul\, and Jello Biafra pepper the film to examine the legiti
macy of nerdcore as a subgenre of hip hop\, the larger rise of nerd cult
ure\, and the desperation of one MC who's trying to make it.\n\n

SUMMARY:At the Death House Door
DESCRIPTION:At the Death House Door follows the remarkable career journey
of Carroll Pickett\, who served 15 years as the death house chaplain to
the infamous "Walls" prison unit in Huntsville\, Texas. During that tim
e he presided over 95 executions\, including the very first lethal injec
tion done anywhere in the world. After each execution\, Pickett recorded
an audiotape account of that fateful day. The film also tells the story
of Carlos De Luna\, a convict whose execution affected Pickett more tha
n any other. Pickett firmly believed the man was innocent and two Chicag
o Tribune reporters turn up evidence that strongly suggests he was right
. As in most of their work\, James and Gilbert tell an engrossing person

But as night falls\, the reality of
war interrupts the drunken respite\, as an Afghani militia attacks their
station. Bohica is at once a recognition of the absurdity and futility
of war and an acknowledgement of the men and women who are compelled to

SUMMARY:For Our Sons
DESCRIPTION:Tennis legend and activist Arthur Ashe sat down and wrote a l
etter to his young daughter to be read and re-read for inspiration and c
omforted as she got older and he wasn't around. The genesis of the docum
entary For Our Sons is in that same vein. It is a cinematic broadcast o

who are in danger of becoming a statistic. The film tells the story of
Black men from different walks of life\, men who have been through the

of the inner city but through strength and perseverance built for themse

SUMMARY:Iris Chang\, The Rape Of Nanking
DESCRIPTION:In July 1937 the Japanese Imperial Army\, which already contr
olled a large section of northeastern China\, launched an undeclared war
against the Republic of China. Five months later its troops entered the
capital city of Nanking and began raping and murdering its citizens in
an orgy of violence that has few parallels in modern history. The Rape o
f Nanking was front page news when it happened but it was soon forgotten
in the west until 1994 when a young Chinese-American writer named Iris
Chang saw photographs of the atrocities at a conference in California. C
hang\, whose own grandparents had barely escaped the massacre\, decided

SUMMARY:To My Great Chagrin: The Unbelievable Story of Brother Theodore
DESCRIPTION:In 1947\, the Los Angeles Daily News described him as Boris K
arloff\, Salvadore Dali\, and Nijinsky all in one. He was Brother Theodo

This Audience Award-winning film from Slam
dance examines the sometimes problematic relationship between documentar
y filmmakers and their subjects within the framework of a gritty urban t
 hriller.

SUMMARY:The Skyjacker
DESCRIPTION:In the Northwest of the 1970's\, a down and almost out loner
comes up with an escape plan from his life — to hijack an airplane and d
emand a ransom. Cigarettes and bourbon fuel his resolve to pull off the
dangerous gambit\, which he undertakes with steely-eyed determination. I
f he can resist the charms of the flight's lovely young stewardess\, he
just might get away with it. The Skyjacker was inspired by the persona o
f D.B. Cooper\, the perpetrator of the only unsolved domestic hijacking
in the United States. While the plot may be standard thriller\, the fi
lm eschews traditional narrative structure and technique\, using long si

community free of contamination and are often forced to take an extreme
approach in their resistance. The economic pressures of foreign companie
s have caused much confusion\, greed and division within families and be
tween communities. Junín has banished those who support mining and unite

SUMMARY:Torn from the Flag
DESCRIPTION:Torn from the Flag is a high-profile English-language feature
documentary about the fall of communism and the significant global effe
cts of the Hungarian Freedom Fight of 1956. This revolution was the firs
t important indicator of and catalyst for the future downfall of communi
sm and later political and economic rearrangement of the world\, and had
important effects on the ending of the Cold War. Hungary's Freedom Figh
t opened the world's eyes to the fact that human and civil rights were b
eing horribly abused under communism\, and provided a precedent and exam
ple for other nations' future similar endeavors. The uprising revealed t
he profound hypocrisy of the 'People's State\,' and initiated a process
that culminated three decades later in the demise of the Soviet Union.\n

SUMMARY:Liberty Kid
DESCRIPTION:There have been many films about the attacks of 9/11 and thei
r aftermath\, but it is rare to find one as subtle\, yet affecting as Li
berty Kid. Two friends\, Derrick and Tico\, were barely getting by to be
gin with\, so when they lose their jobs at the Statue of Liberty after i
t is closed because of the attacks\, they find that their options even m
ore limited. Tico turns to low-grade street hustling and selling drugs w

that the only way he may be able to afford it is by joining the Army ju
st months before the invasion of Iraq. Their volatile friendship is put
to the test as they each follow their different paths. The film touches
on issues like the Iraq War and immigration\, but never in a heavy-hande

 ry deliver message.\n\n

It is a cinematic broadcast o
f life lessons and love for for the many fatherless black boys in the US
who are in danger of becoming a statistic. The film tells the story of
Black men from different walks of life\, men who have been through the
fire of growing up Black and male in the oftentimes hostile environment
of the inner city but through strength and perseverance built for themse
lves their own versions of the American dream.

SUMMARY:Mongol
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (Prisoner of th

nning historical epic. Based on leading scholarly accounts and written b
y Bodrov and Arif Aliyev\, Mongol (Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Lang
uage Film) delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the rul
er who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his per

a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror\, revealing him not
as the evil brute of hoary stereotype\, but as an inspiring\, fearless a

DESCRIPTION:There have been many films about the attacks of 9/11 and thei

SUMMARY:The Visitor
DESCRIPTION:Writer/Director Thomas McCarthy follows up his first feature
film (the multiple Independent Spirit and Sundance Award-winning The Sta
tion Agent) with another film about isolated people who find a connectio
n with each other. Sixty-two-year-old widower Walter Vale (Richard Jenk
ins) is sleepwalking through his life as a tenured professor at a Connec
ticut University. Having lost his passion for writing and teaching\, he
tries to regain a spark by taking piano lessons. When his college send
s him to a conference on global economics\, he finds that a young couple
has taken up residence in his usually vacant New York City apartment.
Tarek (Haaz Sleiman)\, a Syrian man\, and Zainab (Danai Gurira)\, his Se
negalese girlfriend\, are illegal immigrants who have been taken by a re
al estate scam and have nowhere else to go. When Walter reluctantly all
ows them to stay\, the three lives become inevitably intertwined. In pa
rticular Walter bonds with the high-spirited Tarek\, who in return teach
es Walter to play the African drum and introduces him to the world of lo
cal jazz clubs and Central Park drum circles.\n\nThough the issue of imm
igration is certainly addressed in The Visitor\, McCarthy\, an actor him
self (Good Night and Good Luck\, Flags of our Fathers\, and as reporter
Scott Templeton on the latest season of The Wire)\, focuses on the human
istic aspects of the story over the political. Veteran character actor
Richard Jenkins (Flirting with Disaster\, Six Feet Under) shines in the
starring role giving the prickly Walter heart and soul\, and Sleiman\, n
ewcomer Gurira\, and Hiam Abbass (as Tarek’s mother) round out the compe
lling ensemble.\n\nThe film will be followed by a question and answer se
ssion with Thomas McCarthy and the Closing Night Party at Guillotine Pos
 t.
