Let Them Chirp Awhile follows Bobby, a struggling screenwriter taking care of a feisty Jack Russell puppy because of a deal he made with a girl he's hoping to sleep with. During a month of every day life in New York City, Bobby grapples with his womanizer friend Scott and a foe Hart Carlton, who steals Bobby's screenplay ideas and puts them into a campy morality play about 9-11. All of this occurs while Bobby has several failed relationships of his own. What results is a social-satire about moral-relativism, self-reliance, authorship and authenticity and an homage to Vittorio De Sica's 1952 Italian neo-realist gem 'Umberto D.' Let Them Chirp Awhile is a stylized art-film comedy with the fearless spirit of 1970's Cinema.

Oddly enough, as I write this, I can not say I remember much from this film - an unfortunate, though not unexpected occurrence in a film festival setting. However, I do know I enjoyed it as it was unspooling before me. It is a relatively gentle experience, comparative to Woody Allen, or even De Sica, from which he quotes UMBERTO D. Director Jonathan Blitstein showed a clever visual panache and lovely sense of pacing. His characters were well drawn, yet the overall gentleness of the screenplay lacked a memorable edge. I think the piece would be best served screened outside of a festival experience. Blitstein is definitely someone to keep an eye out for.
