Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl Doesn’t. When Tom, a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer dumps him, he shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days together to try to figure out where things went wrong. Starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, 500 Days of Summer (which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival) is a postmodern love story – well technically the film warns that it is not a love story at all. With a kicking soundtrack that includes classic modern rock music from stalwarts like The Smiths to new bands (including Atlanta’s own Black Lips – see them in We Fun as well, also playing at the festival), Fox Searchlight (the studio that brought you Slumdog Millionaire and Little Miss Sunshine) serve up another sure to be crowd-pleasing indie hit.
American Showcase/Georgia Films
World War III's nuclear strikes on the U.S. have set the nation back 200 years. Money holds no worth, food is impossible to find, and hope is all but lost when every survivor of the war is infected by a fatal nuclear plague. Deadland is a post-apocalyptic tale of an ordinary man, Sean Kalos, driven on only one purpose: to find his missing wife in the new United Provinces. What was designed to be the new rebirth has become martial-law, and the Officers of the Province wield their power with cruelty. When Sean crosses them, he finds himself in the middle of a personal war, and his search for his wife dominoes into what could be the revolution the survivors have been waiting for. Filmed almost entirely in Georgia, the film's scope belie the independent film budget showing that you don't need Hollywood budgets to make gripping sci-fi action entertainment.

Blow-Up (1966)

Blow-up (1966)Michelangelo Antoninoi's Blow-Up is a fascinating hybrid of a film. An arthouse core wrapped in a thin  mainstream shell, it's easy to see how its nudity, sex and drug use would have been shocking for the time. How shocking is demonstrated by MGM releasing the film through a subsidiary tha [...]

2012 John Cusack vs. War, Inc. John Cusack

Watch the trailer for Roland Emmerich's new heavy on the SFX, heavy on the big budget premise, light on the character development film 2012 and you'll probably be slightly shocked to see John Cusack.

Following in the footsteps of The Day After Tomorrow and 10,000 B.C., it's not difficult to imagine the amount of non-love 2012 will engender with many critics, while still doing profitable business here and around the world. Among all that is Cusack, a generally respected acto [...]
