Alex (Jess Weixler, Teeth), an actress, seems happily married to her musician husband, Elliot, but their artistic natures provide specific challenges to their fairly new marriage. Elliot is away for periods of time on tour, while Alex has just been cast in a new play that includes an intense love scene with her attractive co-star, Jamie. When the attractions generated on stage begin to invade the real world it presents a challenge to her commitment to monogamy. Alex's only true confidant is her sister, Hellen, who has relationship issues of her own. Swanberg touches on some of the same themes as he has with his previous work, Nights and Weekends and Hannah Takes the Stairs (ATLFF 2007), particularly the issues of young couples trying to make relationships work (or sometimes not trying to), but he takes a bit of a departure by working with a cast of almost entirely professional actors as opposed to the largely filmmaker/actor casts that have populated his previous films. The combination with Swanberg's improvisational style marks the next step in an already noteworthy yet still burgeoning filmmaking career.
