A spiritual journey takes a strange and disturbing turn in this drama from Mexican filmmaker Rodrigo Plá (La Zona). It is the 1928 Mexican Revolution. Churches are closed, and priests have been forced to leave the communities they have served. After Elias and his wife become parents of a baby boy, he is determined to have his child baptized so he travels into town to bring back a priest to perform the ceremony. When government troops learn of this treachery, the entire village brutally pays for Elias’ actions. Elias becomes convinced that he will be condemned for his actions, and he flees to the desert to build an immense church to atone for his sins. During their exile it becomes clear that his children do not share his convictions, and the father’s devotion begins to resemble madness. The Desert Within is a true epic work, dealing in grand themes such as faith, devotion, and redemption and playing out in a beautiful yet stark desert landscape.
