Before American Idol, there was The Eurovision Song Contest. Inaugurated in 1956 in an effort to unify a war-torn Europe, countries sent songs to be performed and broadcast simulataneously across Europe. Eurovision introduced ABBA to the world, launching their international career, and has grown to be one of the most watched non sporting events in the world. In 2003 Junior Eurovision was launched for songwriters under the age of sixteen. Sounds Like Teen Spirit tracks the 2007 Junior Eurovision, following four of the participants. Following the format of such documentaries like Spellbound, we learn about these young competitors’ hopes, dreams, and fears. Their thoughts are insightful and sometimes surprising, and it’s impossible not to be drawn into an immediate rooting interest for these kids. A true tenderhearted crowd-pleaser, Sounds Like Teen spirit will have you tapping your feet and perhaps shedding a few tears, but ultimately it is a celebration of the talent and spirit of the next generation.
